My favorite home inspection story involves a 5 gallon pickle bucket filled with women's underwear. The property owner was a single man in his early 30's. You can probably figure out the rest. My least favorite home inspection story involves a crack pipe and a kitty litter box. You can probably figure out the rest on this one too. In between are stories of dogs urinating in the kitchen and plumbing held together with duct tape.
Home inspections are an important and necessary part of the home buying process. I make a point of attending the inspections on all my transactions. There is no doubt I always learn something and I usually walk away with at least one amusing story.
If you are considering making a home purchase be sure to budget for a home inspection. In Arizona you have a 10 day inspection period after the contract has been accepted.
This Old House has put together a photo gallery of home inspection nightmares. It is worth viewing. Especially if you are trying to save a few hundred bucks by not having an inspection done at all.
Good point. I occasionally watch shows like, "Flip This House" and I am always truly amazed at what they can find structurally (or otherwise) wrong with a house that looks perfectly sound. Thanks for the great reminder!
